Skills are important to have, but it’s almost certain that it takes more than know-how to make it to the top of your field. It’s something more than knowledge that sets the biggest successes apart from the rest. Having the drive and the nerve to get up off of your couch and push yourself to somewhere you’ve never been might just be the most important skill you’ll ever need.
Now, fear of the unknown is perfectly rational. It’s a fear that the vast majority of people have, and the reason that the vast majority of people, sad to say, aren’t the successes they want to be. The ones who truly want it most, who are willing to suffer through uncomfortable or unhappy situations to get to where they want to be, are the people who end up achieving true success in life and business.
Many of the most successful people I’ve known weren’t necessarily the most brilliant, nor the most privileged. They aren’t superheroes; they just realized that they needed to push themselves further than the next guy did. If you can grit your teeth and get through the hard or uncomfortable situation you’ve been dreading, you’re putting yourself ahead of the person who chose to sit it out.
Sitting around wishing for good fortune is an easy path to nowhere, and you just won’t know what you’re capable of until you get up and give it a shot. You’ve heard over and over that life is a constant process of learning, and it’s the absolute truth. There are no lessons to be learned from sitting at home and wishing for a better life.
At the same time, there’s nothing wrong with spending some time in your comfort zone every now and then. It’s important to recharge your batteries periodically, to avoid getting burnt out. But setting up shop there permanently is a guarantee you won’t see the success you’re hoping for. Take a breather, but don’t get too used to your comfort zone…you don’t want to live there.
